“Mohawk Hits” is the term we use to describe rocking back and forth from 1 foot to the other, rather than gliding with both skates on the ice together. With “Mohawk Hits Facing Out,” you are turning your back to the defender and going from front foot, to back foot, and back to front foot, pushing off each time you transfer feet to gain speed. This is a very common technique to shield and protect the puck from a defender, as it puts your body between them and the puck. It is also common to see players use this technique when faking a pass to a teammate who cuts (scissors) behind them, as it forces the defender to choose which player to cover. When using this skill to fake a pass, be sure to coordinate your puck movements with your weight shifting which will help you gain speed and add deception.
