“Fake Stops” are an awesome skating technique that will get a defender to slam on the breaks as they react to your stop, at which point you to continue on the way you were already going. Typically, with a full stop where you are trying to go back the opposite way, leaning your upper body back in the reverse direction is important. Conversely though, an important component to the “Fake Stop” maneuver is that you do not let your upper body lean back the other way. Instead, bring your body to vertical, but then let momentum carry it forwards the way you were originally going, while you push off and accelerate. When practicing the “Fake Stop,” be sure to use both skates to stop, not just 1 or the other. Often players think the “Fake Stop” has to be a lot quicker than it actually does. Remember that if you wanted to be quicker, you would choose a “Fake Punch,” or “Mohawk Hits” (see other sections for these tutorials). What makes the “Fake Stop” unique from these other 2 moves, is that you actually want to come to a full stop, and give the defender time to start to “cheat” to the other side, as you then continue the way you were originally going.
