When we think of acceleration, we often think of it out of a stopped position. In reality, there is as much, if not more, acceleration that comes from gliding than after being completely stopped. The “Glide to Crossover Acceleration” is a very important skill. This is because the possession of the puck is often won or lost during these quick bursts of speed and short distance races. When working on this skill, be sure to focus on being in a ready position in your glides, as this will transfer over to how quickly you can begin accelerating with your crossovers when the time is right. This skill, and its accompanying drills, can help players realize the importance of gliding around in a ready position in games rather than being in a passive on-looker position. It is important to practice being light on your feet and rocking your weight back and forth slightly so you are ready to anticipate and react as quickly as possible.
