“Mohawk Hits” is the term we use to describe rocking back and forth from 1 foot to the other, rather than gliding with both skates on the ice together. In the “Mohawk Hits Facing In,” you are facing your chest towards the defender. You start the skill with the weight on your front foot, then shift it to your back foot, and back to your front foot again, pushing off each time you transfer feet to gain speed. This is a very common technique used to fake a pass or shot, before pulling the puck to a protected spot to beat a defender. It is also commonly used to open up your body to see the whole ice to make a pass, rather than looking back over your shoulder. When performing this skill, be sure to coordinate your puck movements with your weight shifting from foot to foot, which will help you gain speed, as well as making the fake more believable.
